Mount dial gauge [AI so that the tip of the gauge is against the splined portion [BI of the pinion gear shaft To measure the backlash, move the pinion gear shaft back and forth [C] while holding the fro nt axle steadyThe difference between the highest and the lowest gauge reading is the amount of backlashOMeasure backlash at three locations equally spaced on the splinesFront Final Bevel Gear Backlash Standard: 0.100.20 mm (0.0040.008 in (at pinion gear spline)
If the backlash is not within the limit, replace the pinion
gear shimsTo increase backlash, increase the thickness of the shim(s)To decrease backlashdecrease the thickness of the shim(s)OChange the thickness little at time Recheck the backlash, and readjust as necessaryTooth Contact Adjustment Clean any dirt and oil off the bevel gear teeth Apply checkin compound to or teeth on the pinion gear
