4-14 ENGINE TOP END Cyl inder Head
Compression Measurement -Thoroughly warm up the engine so that engine oil between the piston and cylinder walls will help seal compression as it does during normal running-Stop the engine-Remove the rear fender and the front fender (see Frame chapter)-Remove the spark plug and attach compression gauge (special tool) firmly into the spark plug hole-With the throttle fully open, turn the engine over sharply with the kickstarter several times until the compression gauge stops rising; the compression is the highest reading obtainableIf cylinder compression is lower than the usable range, check the following: 1) Gas leakage around the cylinder headreplace the damaged gasket and check the cylinder head warp2) Condition of the valve seating3) Valve clearance4) Pistoncylinder clearance, piston seizureS) Piston ring, piston ring groove6) Compression release weights do not move smoothly
Cylinder Head Removal Notes -Drain the coolant (see Coolant System chapter)-Remove the following parts before cylinder head removalCylinder Head Cover Air Gleaner and Snorkel Duct Cylinder Head Bracket Carburetor Radiator Hose Camshaft Chain Tensioner Camshafts Oil Pipe (under the left side Qf the.camshafts) Exhaust Pi pe Main Oil Pipes (behind of the cylinder) -Remove the cylinder head bolts (6 mm) first, and then remove the cylinder bolts and nuts (6 mm, mm)Cylinder Head Removal
