IGNITION SYSTEM
SERVICE INFORMATION
GENERAL
Some electrical components may be damaged if terminals or connectors are connected or disconnected while the ignition switch is turned to ON and current is present When servicing the ignition system, always follow the steps in the troubleshooting table (page 17-4) The ignition timing cannot be adjusted since the ICM is factory preset The ICM may be damaged if dropped Also, if the connector is disconnected when current is flowing, the excessive voltage may damage the ICM Always turn the ignition switch to OFF before servicing faulty igniti on system is often related to poor connectionsCheck those connections before proceeding Make sure the battery is adequately chargedUsing the starter motor with weak battery results in slower engine cranking speed as well as no spark at the spark plug Use spark plug with the correct heat rangeUsing spark plug with an incorrect heat range can damage the engine The ICM stops the ignition to prevent starting the engine when the transmission is in the reverse position (the reverse switch is turned to ON) with the engine stoppedWhen the vehicle is reverse driving, the ICM lim its the engine speed to 5,000 250 rpm Refer to procedure for ignition pulse generator removalinstallation (page 11-7) Refer to inspection for ignition switch (page 19-6) Refer to inspection for engine stop switch (page 19-7) Referto inspection for reverse switch (page 19-9) Refer to inspection for diode (page 18-14)
