IGNITION SYSTEM
SERVICE INFORMATION
GENERAL
Some electrical components may be damaged if terminals or connectors are connected or disconnected while the ignition switch is ON and current is present When servicing the ignition systemalways follow the checks in the troubleshooting chart on page 18-4 The ignition timing cannot be adjusted since the Ignition Control Module (ICM) is factory preset The ICM may be damaged if dropped Also if the connector is disconnected when current is flowing, the excessive voltage may damage the ICMAlways turn off the ignition switch before servicing faulty ignition system is often related to poor connectionsCheck those connections before proceeding Use spark plug of the correct heat rangeUsing spark plug with an incorrect heat range can damage the engine CKP sensor and alternator exciter coil (stator) removalinstallation (page 11-6) Ignition switch inspection (page 20-5) Engine stop switch inspection (page 20-7) Gear position switch servicing (page 20-9)
