IGNITION SYSTEM
SERVICE INFORMATION
GEN ERAL
Some electrical components may be damaged if terminals or connectors are connected or disconnected while the ignition switch is turned to ON and current is present When servici ng the ignition system, always follow the steps in the troubleshooting table on page 17-4 The ign ition tim ing cannot be adjusted since the ignition control module OCM) is factory preset The ICM may be damaged if droppedAlso, if the connector is disconnected when current is flowing, the excessive voltage may damage the ICM, Always tum the ignition switch to OFF before servicing faulty ignition system is ohen related to poor connectionsCheck those connections before proceeding Make sure the battery is adequately charged Usi ng the starter motor with weak battery results in slower engine cranking speed as well as no spark at the spark plug Use spark plug with the correct heat rangeUsing spark plug with an incorrect heat range can damage the engine The ICM stops the ignition to prevent starting the engine when the transmission is in the reverse position (the reverse switch is turned to ON) with the engine stopped When the vehicle is reverse driving, the ICM limits the engine speed to 4,000 rpm (min, For ignition pulse generator removalinstallation, see page' 1-4 For ignition switch inspection, see page 19-6, For eng ine stop switch inspection, see page 19-6 For reverse switch and diode inspectio ns, see page 19-9
