IGNITION SYSTEM
SERVICE INFORMATION
GENERAL
Some electrical components may be damaged if terminals or connectors are connected or disconnected while the ignition switch is ON and current is present When servicing the ignition system, always follow the steps in the troubleshooting table on page 20-4 This vehicle's Ignition Control Module (ICM) is built in the engine control module (ECM) The ignition timing cannot be adjusted since the ECM is factory preset The ECM may be damaged if droppedAlso, if the connector is disconnected when current is flowing, the excessive voltage may damage the ECMAlways turn off the ignition switch before servicing faulty ignition system is often related to poor connectionsCheck those connections before proceeding Make sure the battery is adequately chargedUsing the starter motor with weak battery results in slower engine cranking speed as well as no spark at the spark plug This vehicle's spark plug is equipped with iridium type electrodeDo not use any spark plug other than specified 11-8 for ignition pulse generator removalinstallation See page 22-9 for ignition switch servicing See page 22-10 for engine stop switch inspection See page 22-22 for reverse switch servicing See page 24-37 for gear position switch servicing
