NOTE: An ohmmeter may be used for the following testing procedures, except for the one concerning shorted windings in armatureCheck commutator for roughness, burnt or scored surfaceIf necessary, turn commutator on lathe, just enough to resurfaceCheck commutator for mica depthIf depth is less than 0.20 mm (.008 in), undercut micaBe sure that no burrs are left and no copper dust remains between segments after undercutting operation is completedCheck commutator condition with an indicatorIf out of specification, replace the starter
