Section 06 DRIVE TRAIN Subsection 02 (FRONT DRIVE)
Position the dial indicator against the tab at 90 degree angle and gently move the pinion shaft back and forth
Scenario If the backlash is correct but the preload is too high, then decrease the preload shim pack to the next lower optionScenario If the preload is correct but more than one backlash measurement is less than 0.025 mm (.001 in) (low backlash) then increase the backlash shim packNOTE: The preload shim will need to be decreased by the same amount to keep the preload within specificationReassemble the differential and recheck backlash and preload torqueRepeat adjustment procedure until both backlash and preload are within specificationScenario If the preload is correct but one or more of the backlash measurements are over 0.152 mm (.006 in) (high backlash) then decrease the backlash shim packNOTE: The preload shim pack must increase by the same amount to keep the preload within specificationReassemble the differential and recheck backlash and preload torqueRepeat adjustment procedure until both backlash and preload are within specificationScenario If both preload and backlash are out of specification then adjust both shim packs in the appropriate directionReassemble the differential and recheck backlash and preload torqueRepeat adjustment procedure until both backlash and preload are within specificationAfter obtaining the proper backlash, do the final reassembly
