Section 06 DRIVE TRAIN Subsection 03 (REAR AXLE)
Inspection
Check axle for bending, torsion or other damageChange if necessaryCheck axle for spots of rustA spot of rust indicates possible damage to axleChange axle if necessaryIf bearings are seized on the axle, the axle must be replaced or its surface cleanedBearings must still have slide fit on the axle, otherwise it will result in faulty re-assembly and failure may occurBearing races on the axle must be in good conditionOn sprocket hub side, check the wear ring where the seal runsIt must be in good conditionCheck for grooves or excessive wearIf the ring is grooved, it must be replacedRemove old ring and, using tool PN 529 035 694, press new one into placeIf the sprocket hub has been damaged, replace it too
REAR SPROCKET HUB
Removal
CAUTION: Removing rear sprocket hub from rear axle will permanently damage the hub splinesDo not remove hub needlesslyRemove rear axleRefer to REAR AXLE belowNOTE: The wear ring can be removed without removing the sprocket hubUse large screwdrivers each side of wear ring and pry it outDiscard ringRemove the RH wheel hubUsing an appropriate steel tube as pusher, press the hub down approximately mm (.080 in) to allow C-clip removalNOTE: Heat sprocket hub in the center area to allow hub displacementInstallation
