Section 05 ELECTRICAL Subsection 05 (IGNITION SYSTEM)
Primary Winding Disconnect the wire connector on the primary side of the ignition coilUsing multimeter, check the resistance between the terminals and 2Repeat resistance test between terminals and 3The resistance should be between 0.4 and 0.9 at 20C (68F)If not within specification, replace the ignition coilIf the ignition coil test good, check the power supply on the primary sideThere should be 12 Vdc between the RED YELLOW and BLACKGREEN wires or between the RED YELLOW and GREEN wires while starting the engineIf there is no voltage, either the MPEM or the wiring harness is defectiveSecondary Winding Due to the integrated diode, it is not possible to take any resistance measurementThe output voltage should not be less than 12 kV (12 000 V)The ignition coil outlet caps and the spark plug caps include resistanceThey should be checked prior to replacing suspected ignition coilMeasure resistance between ignition coil outlet caps and spark plug capsThe obtained value should be between 5.4 and 5.7 kIf resistance is good, continue checkIf not, change spark plug wiresDYNAMIC TEST An ignition coil tester available from after-market toolequipment suppliers can be usedCAUTION: Do NOT use coil tester on metal work benchFollow manufacturer instructionsIf the ignition coil is out of specification, replace itIf it tests good ensure the wiring and connectors are in good condition then continue the other tests
