Section 05 ELECTRICAL Subsection 04 (STARTING SYSTEM)
ACTIVATION OF NEW BATTERY
WARNING
Never charge or boost battery while installed on vehicleCAUTION: Prior to charging the battery, always remove it from the vehicle to prevent electrolyte spillageA new battery is factory fresh dry chargedFor storage purposes, it is fitted with temporary sealing tubeDo not remove the sealing tube or loosen battery caps unless activation is desiredIn case of accidental premature removal of caps or sealing tube, battery should be given full chargePerform the following operations anytime new battery is to be installed1Remove the sealing tube from the vent elbowInstall vent tube, included in the battery kit, to battery elbow

5Readjust the electrolyte level to the UPPER LEVEL line6Connect battery charger for 10 to 20 hours
WARNING
Gases given off by battery being charged are highly explosiveAlways charge in well ventilated areaKeep battery away from cigarettes or open flamesAlways turn battery charger off prior to disconnecting cablesOtherwise spark will occur and battery might explodeCAUTION: If charging rate raises higher than 2.4 reduce it immediatelyIf cell temperature rises higher than 50C (122F) (if the casing feels hot) discontinue charging temporarily or reduce the charging rate7Disconnect battery charger8Test battery state of chargeUse hydrometer9Let battery settle for hour10Allow gas bubbles to escape by lightly shaking battery11Readjust electrolyte level12Reinstall caps and clean any electrolyte spillage using solution of baking soda and water
