The following procedure can be used on both front differential or rear drive gear caseNOTE: All bearings must be installed in the gear case and the pinion properly installed before proceeding Backlash
NOTE: Always set backlash prior to any other shimming
1Install the existing shim or 0.051-0.055-inshim on the gear case side of the ring gear assembly
5Place punch on the edge of the lock collar in the oil gallery area; then using hammer, stake the lock collar to ensure that the collar will remain securely tightened
2Install the ring gear with shim in the gear case; then while holding the pinion stationary, rock the ring gear forward and back to determine if any backlash existsIf no backlash exists, install thicker shim and recheck
