Installing Piston Rings 1Install the expander spring making sure the ends are aligned on the wire; then install the oil ring with the ring gap 90 from the spring gap and the marking "E TOP" directed toward the top of the piston GZ187A
CAUTION
Incorrect installation of the piston rings will result in engine damage
CYLINDERCYLINDER HEAD ASSEMBLY
NOTE: If the cylindercylinder head assembly cannot be trued, they must be replaced
CleaningInspecting Cylinder Head
CAUTION
The cylinder head studs must be removed for this procedure
1Using non-metallic carbon removal tool, remove any carbon buildup from the combustion chamber being careful not to nick, scrape, or damage the combustion chamber or the sealing surfaceGZ169A
2Install the second compression ring with the marking "E TOP" directed toward the top of the piston
2Inspect the spark plug hole for any damaged threadsRepair damaged threads using "heli-coil" insert3Place the cylinder head on the surface plate covered with #400 grit wet-or-dry sandpaperUsing light pressure, move the cylinder head in figure eight motionInspect the sealing surface for any indication of high spotsA high spot can be noted by bright metallic finishCorrect any high spots before assembly by continuing to move the cylinder head in figure eight motion until uniform bright metallic finish is attained
