Measuring Cylinder Head Distortion 1Remove any carbon buildup in the combustion chamber2Lay straightedge across the cylinder head; then using feeler gauge, check the distortion factor between the head and the straightedge3Maximum distortion must not exceed specificationsCC129D
Inspecting Cam Chain Guide 1Inspect cam chain guide for cuts, tears, breaks, or chips2If the chain guide is damaged, it must be replacedInspecting Cylinder 1Using slide gauge and dial indicator or snap gauge, measure the cylinder bore diameter in three locations from top to bottom and again from top to bottom at 90 from the first measurements for total of six measurementsThe trueness (out-of-roundness) is the difference between the highest and lowest readingMaximum trueness (out-of-roundness) must not exceed specifications

CleaningInspecting Cylinder 1Wash the cylinder in parts-cleaning solvent2Inspect the cylinder for pitting, scoring, scuffing, warpage, and corrosionIf marks are found, repair the surface using cylinder hone (see Inspecting Cylinder in this sub-section)3Place the cylinder on the surface plate covered with #400 grit wet-or-dry sandpaperUsing light pressure, move the cylinder in figure eight motionInspect the sealing surface for any indication of high spotsA high spot can be noted by bright metallic finishCorrect any high spots before assembly by continuing to move the cylinder in figure eight motion until uniform bright metallic finish is attained
