3Wipe any accumulation of oil or gas from the filter housing and one-way drains (Feeler Gauge Procedure) To check and adjust valvetappet clearance, use the following procedureNOTE: The seat, air filter housing, front fenders, front inner covers, and side panels must be removed for this procedure

! CAUTION
The feeler gauge must be positioned at the same angle as the valve and valve adjuster for an accurate measurement of clearanceFailure to measure the valve clearance accurately could cause valve component damageNOTE: Cold tappet clearance is 0.20-0.25 mm (0.0079-0.0098 in for exhaust valves and 0.10-0.15 mm (0.0039-0.0059 in for intake valves
1Remove the cap screws securing the recoil starter; then remove the recoil starter assembly2Remove the timing inspection plug; then remove the four tappet covers (for more detailed information, see SectionServicing Top-Side Components)3Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to the TDC position on the compression stroke indicated by the TF mark (A) on the flywheelTF is top dead center frontNOTE: At this point, the rocker arms and adjuster screws on the front cylinder must not have pressure on them
